Every Monday in our house, until further notice, we will officially be “screen-free” from 6pm to bedtime.
Screen-free will mean anything with a screen is not allowed. No video games, no tv, no laptops or iPhones and (gasp!) no Twitter. Instead we will play a game together, go for a walk outside or just be together. We’ve had to warn the boys however, that screen-free night doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be all about playing games. We may have to pick up sticks in the yard so that it can be mowed, or we may have to fold and put away laundry among many other tedious chores. But so far…it’s been all about the games… Connect 4, Sorry, Go Fish, you name it.
However, we need some suggestions from you. What would you do if your night was screen-free? Your comments on this post are highly encouraged (and needed), so please share your ideas whether or not they are kid-friendly.
We started screen-free night a couple of weeks ago, and it is not the first time we’ve tried it. Hence the reason I am knocking out all of my work, blog posts and Tweeting on this gorgeous Sunday afternoon. No worries…I’m still enjoying the Spring sunshine. I am perched on a chair with my Mac in my lap on the deck in the backyard. Life is good, with or without screens.

Read, read, and read some more! The more the vocabulary grows, the more the mind grows. I love to read to my boys and play number games. My 5 year old likes to have me ask him addition questions and then he gives me the answer. He can actually add round numbers in the millions.
Reading would be my first choice – because I love to read and both of my sons, now 25 and 29, do, too.
How about Scrabble. My 85 yr old mother just played it for the first time on Easter, and she really enjoyed it. It was good family fun and educational at the same time. My 25 year old writer beat the pants off of everyone!
Outside, I’m getting reacquained with Tennis and Jumping Rope. Both quite challenging and fun.
Nothing beats a good bike ride or walk in the nice weather – which I think you have more of than I do.
By the way, I think screenless Mondays are a great idea!
Lots to check out at http://www.Boardgamegeek.com.
There are lots of great board games out there that are not published by Hasbro (and even some that are
.
Depending on your boy’s respective ages there are a lot of good options out there.
If I partook in a “screen free” day, I would intake a mass quantity of hallucinogenic drugs until I could imagine a television in my mind. I LOVE SCREENS! ESPECIALLY ON MONDAYS!
