She’s My Favorite

by Jessica Hickok on April 14, 2010

I’m the oldest of 4 kids. Although that is not unusual in most people’s cases, it is in mine. You see I am SIXTEEN years older than my youngest sister, Emma. And truth be told, she’s my favorite. Emma recently started reading this blog and I know that my two other siblings (in between me and Emma) don’t read this blog, so I can say that she’s my favorite with no remorse.

However, it is difficult to keep up with her and her fabulous teenage life. Thank goodness for Facebook, assuming she hasn’t blocked me from seeing the juicy stuff. I love seeing pictures of her at homecoming dances and snapshots of her and her friends.  I find myself being so proud of her, I only wished we lived closer.  (No doubt, the live-in babysitter thing would be nice.)

So in my walk down memory lane, I’ve compiled a short list of my favorite things about my favorite sister and I feel compelled to share it with you:

  1. I was one of the first people who got to hold her when she was born in 1993.  It was the only thing that got my mind off of having a brand new drivers license and just wanting to be with my friends.
  2. She saved my life when she was almost 4 years old.  My blood sugars had dropped extremely low and in my lethargic low of laying on the floor, she got the sugar bowl and a spoon and started spooning the sugar into my mouth until my Mom to come help.  She wasn’t quite 4 years old yet, but how she knew the seriousness of my type 1 diabetes and knew what to do.
  3. To this day, she wants to be a nurse.  And after her heroic efforts listed above at such an early age, she’s bound to make an incredible nurse.
  4. At age 5, she was the flower girl in my wedding and screamed her little head off when we left for our honeymoon.  Quite funny today, but pretty embarrassing back then.
  5. When I see her today, we can pick up right where we have left off.  And it’s usually in the Sephora store in the mall.
  6. I was the only freshman in college who knew all the words to Blue’s Clues “Whose Treasure Is This?!”
  7. We have a secret across-the-room handshake that is based off of the noise made by Flubber in the famous movie.
  8. I see her creating the same type of bonds with my oldest son that I had with her, when she was his age.

Thanks for letting me take a walk down memory lane.  I love my little sister, and since she now reads the blog, I feel this was the best place to tell her so.

That is so cute! :) I wish I had a little sister. I just have a younger brother, who is 20. He’s OK. Haha. He’s a boy so that’s tough. Maybe we’ll be closer when he gets a little older.
