After 6 Years, I Still Don’t Know What e-PRO is

So I just got back into the office after sitting thru a 90 minute presentation about the benefits of being ePro certified by the National Association of REALTORS. Huh?
In 2002, I attended the NAR annual convention in New Orleans, and I sat thru the same type of presentation. I walked out of there still not sure how the term “e-Pro” behind my name would help me be a better REALTOR. At the time, I didn’t think much of it, I knew it was a brand new designation and way that NAR could rake in some more money. I figured that they would work out the kinks and in time, there would be more for me to gain by becoming e-Pro certified. However, it gave us some good jokes to crack in the office about the lunacy of this ridiculous certification that didn’t mean anything.
Fast forward to 2008. I get an invitation to our local board of REALTORS to attend an e-Pro informational seminar and a $25 off coupon for the course. The course is an online course that costs $395. What?! Almost $400 for a designation behind my name that will not make me a better REALTOR? I still don’t get it!
Here are my Top 5 Reasons for NOT going e-Pro:
- $400 boils down to $80 per letter (including the hyphen) to put the designation “e-Pro” behind my name on my business card.
- According to today’s class, the only benefit to e-Pro is that I can be part of the “e-Pro Talk” group featured on NAR’s web site. This group will give you tips and tricks to buying new technology toys like cameras, computers, and software programs. Yahoo Answers does that too.
- Yahoo Answers is free and I can score points for answering/asking questions about what types of technology are out there and how to use them. And, I still have $400 in my pocket and 2,307 points on my Yahoo Answers account.
- I still don’t understand what e-Pro does or is.
- The guy who taught the class what kind of a dork, just like the guy was 6 years ago in New Orleans.

Being an e-pro means that you are an e-professional. An e-Professional knows how to do things like use e-mail and e-sites and send out an e-newsletter along with e-forms so that you can get more e-business. It’s so e-simple!
I just think that it took off with the fad of sticking “e-” in front of various nouns to make it sound high tech.
You’re not just a pro, you’re an E-PRO!! (and knowing is half the e-battle)
It is about time someone exposed this farce. Information is so out of date and not kept current. The other e-Pro people I know are so e-illiterate it is pathetic.
Your blog is interesting!
Keep up the good work!
