Barcamp. Neat or On The Rocks?

When I first heard the term “barcamp,” all sorts of things came to my mind.  Camp out at the bar? I down with that.

But barcamp, and specifically REBarcamp, involves a whole ‘nother type of buzz.  As of today, I’ve never actually attended one so I am speaking of this in anticipation of what to expect when I go to REBarcamp San Diego this November.

Starting with the basics…  REBarcamp is the “unconference” that is free to attend.  It is an all day gathering of like minded people (in this case, real estate people).  I’ve been told to expect things to be a little chaotic.  There is no set plan and you better come prepared to be involved.  There are no wall flowers allowed.  It’s kind of like networking with your peers, but also teaching and learning from them as well.  In order to get the most out of barcamp, you have to get involved.  Offer to lead a breakout session or panel discussion in what works, technology-wise, in your real estate business.  It’s the sharing of ideas that is what makes a barcamp work.  That is the gist of it, I think.  I will have to let you know after I attend the one in San Diego, just before the NAR annual conference and expo.

Now I’ve seen these barcamps popping up all over the place.  They’re not just popular with REALTORS®.  I’ve seen Wordcamps, Fashioncamp, and even a Floatcamp.  So, with all of these different types of barcamps popping up all over, do you think that the excitement will fade and they become a dime a dozen?  In other words, are barcamps neat or are they on the rocks?  Let’s belly up to the bar and discuss it further.
